Currently, about 4% of the languages are spoken by 96% of the population, whereas 25% of the languages have fewer than 1000 speakers. In addition, unless current trends change, linguists estimate that 90% of the about 6000 languages currently spoken may become extinct, or greatly endangered, by the end of this century.
